BUSINESS NEWS

  • ConnectLife is holding open interviews today from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at its Williamsville office to hire phlebotomists with starting pay of $19, and UB and Canisius earned high US News rankings + Misuta Chows arcade machines have moved to Cheektowaga Country Club while Dottie Gallagher retires as CEO of the Buffalo Niagara Partnership with Grant Loomis set to take over next June.  WBEN
  • Buffalo developer Rocco Termini said that special events, concerts and theater shows boosted sales at his Tappo restaurant over Labor Day weekend—with $30,000 on September 19 and $12,000 on September 21—and he believes more events will draw more people downtown. Future plans include hosting flea markets, car shows and sports tournaments on Ellicott Street as part of a broader downtown revitalization effort in the mayoral race.  WBEN

  • Dr. Raul Vazquez, founder of Urban Family Practice on Buffalo’s Lower West Side, is under investigation by the Attorney General for allegedly backdating records and billing Medicaid for services not provided—legal papers report a sample audit from 2018-19 showed 17% of Home Health program members received no core services.  WGRZ
  • The Vatican said it may be illegal for the Buffalo Diocese to use money from a sold church—money meant for its clergy sex abuse settlement—and the ruling could force changes in how the diocese uses its funds.  WGRZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • The handcrafted replica boat Seneca Chief left Canalside yesterday to start a 33-day journey along the Erie Canal to New York City. The boat will follow a historic route to re-create a traditional voyage—honoring the region's past.  The Buffalo News
  • The Buffalo Science Museum finished restoring its historic north facade+ museum officials said the improved exterior now preserves a key local landmark and will welcome visitors soon.  WGRZ
  • Officials plan to update the Teddy Roosevelt site so that history meets modern technology. The project will add new interactive exhibits—merging the past with innovation while keeping its legacy intact.  WGRZ

ECONOMY NEWS

  • NOCO hosted an energy forum on Wednesday in Amherst where local business leaders learned about rising energy costs and how to access state incentives through NYSERDA. Speakers warned that a drop in fossil fuel supply coupled with growing demand — and expiring rebates — could push electricity prices up by 20% in the next few years.  WBEN

  • At UB, the new book club meets weekly to encourage a love for reading free of digital distractions—its relaxed gatherings aim to counter the decline in reading habits among students and other age groups.  The Spectrum

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Great Lakes Cheese discharged wastewater with pollutants far above its permit limits into Ischua Creek for months—pollution that likely killed tens of thousands of fish and harmed aquatic life. The DEC began investigating nearly a month ago and is now evaluating enforcement actions to restore the creek.  The Buffalo News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Judge Emilio Colaiacovo ruled on September 24th that the comptroller did not have the power to block bond market financing for Buffalo's record $110 million capital budget, and Acting Mayor Chris Scanlon said officials will move forward with bond offerings for infrastructure projects despite past objections—local leaders believe the decision affirms the separation of executive and fiscal responsibilities.  WBFO
