- ➤ The Vatican has suspended the closure of Historic St. John Kanty Church on Buffalo’s east side after parishioners appealed to keep it open. The church, shuttered in May as part of a diocesan downsizing plan, will remain open for 90 days while its appeal is reviewed. ABC 7
BUSINESS NEWS
- ➤ Buffalo Carshare is back—reopened after its 2015 shutdown due to insurance issues, and now offers two electric Chevy Bolts with a $7 hourly rate today. The nonprofit plans to expand to 20 cars by next year to help low-income residents get affordable transportation. The Buffalo News
- ➤ Radius Federal Credit Union will merge with Lake Shore Federal Credit Union on Oct. 2, keeping the Angola branch open and expanding access for Lake Shore members to Radius's Delaware Avenue branch plus enhanced digital banking tools. This merger will strengthen Radius's presence in Erie County and offer members a wider range of financial products. WGRZ

- ➤ Lockport marks the Erie Canal's 200th anniversary as local volunteers show off the restored Flight of Five locks—three locks now work for demonstrations after more than 20 years of effort. A film called 'America’s Stairway' will play at North Park on Oct. 15 and on PBS starting Oct. 20 to share the canal’s history. The Buffalo News

- ➤ Buffalo Schools Superintendent Pascal Mubenga hired associate superintendents Shana Perry and Tamara Thomas from Texas and North Carolina to help lead more than 10 school buildings. He has also partnered with School Transformation Consultants to launch an assistant principals academy that will meet monthly from October through March—aiming to build a strong pipeline of future leaders. - ➤ Gov. Kathy Hochul warned New Yorkers today to be alert for scams targeting inflation refund checks—scammers have sent fake texts, emails and calls asking for personal payment information while refunds will be sent to about 8.2 million households over the next few months. - ➤ Local union leaders and healthcare advocates are urging Congress to extend ACA tax credits that help over 50,000 Erie County residents pay for insurance to avoid a government shutdown starting October 1—if not renewed in a continuing resolution, local hospitals may face increased costs and service cuts. - ➤ Roswell Park has started DropTheVape—a free and confidential texting tool that sends 2 to 4 texts a day for six weeks to help youths overcome nicotine addiction. The program is run by the New York State Quitline to support efforts in reducing e-cigarette use in the region. The Buffalo News
- ➤ Advocates in Buffalo rallied Monday to urge Congress not to allow a government shutdown and to extend Affordable Care Act tax credits so that more than 200,000 New Yorkers can keep lower health care costs—warning that without the extension, families facing high living expenses would have to choose between basic needs.
