BUSINESS NEWS

  • Rosina is launching one of Buffalo’s largest hiring pushes to add 150 full-time associates in the next 60 days for its $30 million meatball plant expansion in West Seneca—doubling production from 50 million to 100 million pounds—while hosting open interviews on Oct. 10 from 12–4 p.m. at 170 French Road in Cheektowaga.  WBEN
  • Buffalo News will stop printing papers on Mondays starting the week of Nov 3 and will print Tuesday through Sunday while keeping a daily online edition. The change gives one month’s notice — a cost-cutting move that local unions have criticized.  WBEN

  • The Buffalo Sabres fired Adam Mair today after he was charged with a felony DWI—he is no longer with the team.  WGRZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Buffalo now has a new Scajaquada Heritage Area that stretches from Flint Hill and Forest Lawn Cemetery to Unity Island Park and along Lake Erie to Freedom Park—highlighting the area's importance to Seneca history and the War of 1812. State Assemblymember Jon Rivera and State Senator Sean Ryan credited heritage advocate MaryAnn Kedron for leading the effort to recognize the site.  WBFO

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Buffalo State’s Anne Frank Project will host its 17th annual Social Justice Festival—'Belonging Begins Here'—on October 8 and 9 to let students, faculty and the community share stories and take part in workshops and art exhibits that explore ideas of inclusion and healing. The festival will feature interactive sessions including group storytelling led by provost Amitra Wall to deepen everyone's understanding of belonging.  Buffalo State University
  • Since 2011, Buffalo State’s Anne Frank Project has taken more than 170 students to Rwanda for a study abroad program that uses visits to schools, genocide memorials, and local markets to teach community conflict resolution and cultural understanding—this summer, a diverse group from various majors joined the program with faculty members Anita and Gehan Senthinathan leading workshops on communication, trauma-informed care, and addiction while building research partnerships with local experts.  Buffalo State University
  • Four Buffalo State MS in PR students received Student Excalibur Awards from the Public Relations Society of America’s Buffalo Niagara Chapter during a Thursday night ceremony—these awards honor their capstone campaigns developed in the COM 690 course under experienced faculty guidance.  Buffalo State University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The DEC issued its final decision this week and said that Niagara Falls will not get a hazardous waste landfill — the agency rejected the proposal and confirmed no new facility will be built.  The Buffalo News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • State Sen. Sean Ryan and Assemblyman Jon Rivera said truck tie-ups at the Peace Bridge were caused by U.S. and Canadian federal agencies plus local border authorities deflecting their questions. They will press for better communication to help truck drivers avoid future delays.  WBEN
  • A federal judge recommended voiding a 1954 easement that allowed New York State to build the Thruway through the Seneca Nation’s Cattaraugus Territory because it violated federal law under the Treaty of Canandaigua—New York State must now negotiate a new easement immediately, a move the Seneca Nation welcomed.  WBFO
  • Residents can submit their comments on the state energy plan by October 6, and the plan—designed to increase renewables to 70% by 2030 and require new homes to be electric from January 1—will be finalized at the end of the year.  WBEN

HEALTH NEWS

  • Mariah Wilcox, a 12-year-old Bills fan from Central New York with a severe leg difference, chose to amputate her shorter leg—after many surgeries—and now uses a Bills-themed prosthetic leg. Her family enjoyed a surprise when the Buffalo Bills gave them club-level seats as they cheered the team win against the New Orleans Saints.  WGRZ
  • Residents on Medicare should review new plan changes as open enrollment begins Oct 15 for plans effective in January; experts advise checking provider networks and prescription drug benefits—approximately 130,000 New Yorkers have received letters that their current plans are ending and must choose alternatives by Dec 7.  WGRZ

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • McGuire Development closed on the purchase of the historic Dun Building in downtown Buffalo on Oct. 3—buying it for $1.85 million—and will spend $10 million to turn floors two through ten into 36 market rate apartments later this year or by early 2026.  WBEN
