COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Thursday, the Service Collaborative of WNY will host its 7th annual TSC on Tap Fundraiser at Resurgence Brewing Company in Buffalo from 4:30 p.m. until 8 p.m., featuring craft beer, food and raffles. At 6:15 p.m., the event will announce the 10th class of TSC Champions of Service—proceeds support local workforce development programs.  WGRZ
  • A Buffalo Niagara Honor Flight mission briefing was held today in Williamsville as the group prepares for its first trip with all female veterans next week from Western New York to Washington—D.C. where 35 veteran travelers and their guardians will visit national memorials, and a welcome home celebration is scheduled for Oct. 12 when the flight returns around 8:25 p.m.  WGRZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • Corpus Christi Church in Buffalo held its 46th Dożynki Polish Harvest Festival on Saturday with music, dancing, and homemade food that honored Polish heritage—today the church hosts one final day for visitors to enjoy traditional fare.  WGRZ
  • On Saturday, cyclists united for the Can-Am Freedom Ride starting at Freedom Park and riding across the Peace Bridge into Fort Erie before returning, honoring U.S.-Canada friendship and the Underground Railroad history — organized by Niagara River Greenway, East Side Bike Club, and local Rotary Clubs.  WGRZ
  • Nickel City Comic Con’s fall show is underway at the Buffalo Convention Center this weekend—local organizers expect a strong turnout from comic fans.  WGRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Preteen opponents of book bans organized a Right to Read rally at Amherst's Audubon Public Library today — the event features bestselling authors, a member of Congress, and the middle school students who planned it.  The Buffalo News

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • New York State will begin a temporary burn ban this Thursday in Buffalo due to rising wildfire risks and dry conditions. The ban will last until Oct. 15 and restrict most outdoor fires — officials said they will reevaluate it before it expires.  WGRZ
  • Residents in some areas oppose big lithium-ion battery storage projects because they fear the batteries may overheat and catch fire after a major incident in California. Local officials like Island Park mayor Michael McGinty said they will not risk unsafe installations—experts are working to improve system safety.  WBEN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Today, a federal judge ruled that New York State never had the legal right to build part of the Thruway on 300 acres of Seneca Nation land in the Cattaraugus Territory—he recommended that the state invalidate its easement and start new negotiations with the Nation.  WGRZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center said it will leave the network for Independent Health's Individual Medicare Advantage plan starting January 1 because the plan will shift more costs to patients—raising deductibles, co-pays, and out-of-pocket expenses. Patients are urged to review their coverage options during open enrollment.  ABC 7

SPORTS NEWS

  • Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen will wear a special cap honoring 5-year-old leukemia survivor Bryn today against the New England Patriots to support Oishei Children’s Hospital through the Patricia Allen Fund—at the game’s start, the cap will be auctioned off with bids accepted until Tuesday, October 7 at 8:00 p.m. EST, and all proceeds will help with care for children and families.  WGRZ
  • After three years and spending $850 million, the Bills took on all cost overruns for the new stadium that now costs more than $2.1 billion—taxpayer funds dropped by over 20%.  The Buffalo News
  • UB won a close overtime game against Eastern Michigan when Jack Howes hit a 50 yard field goal as time expired and the defense recovered a fumbled two point conversion to secure a 31-30 victory at UB Stadium during homecoming. Victor Snow scored a touchdown in overtime and UB will play UMass on Oct. 18.  WGRZ
