COMMUNITY NEWS

  • JP's Pub in Lake View is offering free meals to children from families in need as SNAP benefits will be cut on November 1+ manager JP Melisz said he wants every child to have a meal to avoid hunger. The pub is already preparing pasta dishes+ it hopes local businesses will join in helping neighbors.  ABC 7
  • Visit Buffalo has joined a national program that trains local residents to become certified tourism ambassadors. Thirty locals already took a half-day course earlier this week to learn about hidden spots in Buffalo, Erie County — and the program will expand to train more residents soon.  WBFO
  • The local plant store Life is Succulent in Eggertsville is hosting its second Buy Nothing Fair next weekend to offer free household items and non-perishable food to help community members in need. Manager Jake Boenning and owner Kristin Metzen said they expect donations to match the rising need after the first fair attracted hundreds quickly + they are accepting drop-offs at 1249 Eggert Road.  ABC 7
  • Bishop Michael Fisher returned from a weeklong trip to the Vatican—where he met with Pope Leo XIV and top Vatican officials to discuss the diocese's Chapter 11 bankruptcy and the Road to Renewal plan that will close or merge nearly half the parishes. He said the meeting focused on finding a way forward that addresses survivor concerns and the dwindling parish resources.  WGRZ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • West Herr donated 10 new handcycles Tuesday at West Herr Chevrolet in Williamsville, and 3-time Paralympic Gold Medalist Adam Page presented them to athletes with disabilities while Hilbert College launched a Cybersecurity Administration master’s program for undergraduates. Mahle in Lockport will add 11 jobs with a $6.8 million expansion, Erie County tied its record with 83 million-dollar home sales after a home on Hillsboro Drive sold for $1.5 million, and an 1895 building in Orchard Park sold for $1.2 million.  WBEN

CULTURE NEWS

  • Iron Monk was a hit in Buffalo this past summer at Delaware Park on Wednesday evenings at The Juicery—mixing many genres while the band, including students from The Buffalo Academy for the Visual and Performing Arts, built a community around live performance and plans to expand gigs across Western New York in the future.  WGRZ

ECONOMY NEWS

  • The federal government shutdown has paused the SBA 7(a) loan program for small businesses in Buffalo, leaving them unable to apply for new funds + officials say the program will reopen when the shutdown ends.  The Buffalo News

HEALTH NEWS

  • Kaleida’s CEO said that federal Medicaid cuts accelerated its $200 million improvement plan that the system had been working on since early this year — the accelerated schedule is set to address the funding shortfall. The plan will now be implemented at a faster pace to meet system needs.  The Buffalo News
  • Dr. Drucy Borowitz turned cystic fibrosis from a deadly childhood disease into one that can be managed—her work has given patients worldwide hope for a healthy life.  WGRZ

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Developer Joseph Carubba is leading a $40 million project to build a five-story, 123-unit apartment building called The Ellie on Fillmore Avenue in the City of Tonawanda. Demolition and brownfield cleanup will start this fall and construction is set to begin by spring so tenants can move in by early 2027 — marking one of the largest private sector projects in the area.  WBEN

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Bulls women's basketball team won a home exhibition game 69-63 against Canisius as head coach Kristen Sharkey debuted with most of the roster; they will play Marshall University next Monday at 6 p.m. in Huntington, West Virginia.  The Spectrum
  • Buffalo Bills head coach Sean McDermott gave an injury update ahead of the game against the Chiefs — he said the team is working to get ready and will share more details as needed.  WGRZ
  • Bulls football lost to the Akron Zips 24—16 at home on Saturday, marking their first MAC loss of the season. Four interceptions by senior quarterback Ta’Quan Roberson and other turnovers hurt the team—Bowling Green awaits next week.  The Spectrum
  • The Bills will wear white helmets, blue jerseys and white pants as they host Patrick Mahomes and the Chiefs at 4:25 p.m. Sunday at Highmark Stadium — the team has seen more success with these classic uniforms this season.  WGRZ
