COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Local organizations in Western New York are preparing to offer free food and basic supplies to families losing SNAP benefits—community groups are coordinating services at various local sites to help those in need.  The Buffalo News
  • Tops Friendly Markets will launch its Little Brown Bag of Hope campaign tomorrow by accepting $5, $10, or $20 donations at any register to help FeedMore WNY meet rising needs—donations will be collected until December 24 and the Food 2 Families drive will run on December 5 at select locations.  WGRZ

BUSINESS NEWS

  • Akruti Babaria from Amherst started Kulture Khazana to help her son celebrate her cultural heritage+ her company now has three products available in nearly 300 Target stores.  The Buffalo News

CRIME NEWS

  • On Thursday, the SPCA rescued 26 dogs and puppies from a condemned Buffalo home where they lived in unsafe, unsanitary conditions— all now receive veterinary care as animal cruelty charges are pending.  WGRZ

EDUCATION NEWS

  • St. Francis High School in Athol Springs received its two largest gifts ever, with donations of $5 million and $6 million (totaling $11 million) that will fund future school programs.  The Buffalo News
  • West Herr has donated funds to SUNY Erie Community College to support its Vehicle Technical Training Center in Orchard Park—modernizing equipment and expanding co-op programs. D’Youville University received a $25,000 grant plus extra donations for service-based learning while Trocaire College will add alcohol and substance abuse counseling to its associate degree program.  WBEN

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation announced that more than 1,200 acres in Westchester, the Finger Lakes and Western New York have been permanently protected to guard clean water. Five land trusts received over $7.4 million in grants and Buffalo Niagara Waterkeeper with help from the WNY Land Conservancy acquired Erie County lands—wetlands and forests that help filter drinking water.  WGRZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • Seneca Nation President JC Seneca said in a press conference Friday that an email exchange between Salamanca Police Chief Jamie Deck and District Attorney Lori Reiman showed hostility toward Seneca Marshals enforcing exclusion orders against drug dealers—he stressed the Nation is waiting on Governor Hochul to sign legislation that would boost removal authority.  WGRZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Breast cancer survivor Sharon Sanford founded Sadie Strong on the one-year anniversary of her 2017 diagnosis to boost early detection and healthy lifestyles in Buffalo. Her nonprofit inspires many as she shares her journey and new achievements—like running a 5K and biking long distances—with support from her family.  WGRZ

REAL ESTATE NEWS

  • Evergreen Health has put the former Towne restaurant site at the corner of Allen Street and Elmwood on the market with a $1.8 million asking price after plans for a health clinic were dropped due to federal funding cutbacks—local experts expect a new restaurant operator may reopen the iconic building.  WBEN

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Buffalo Bills home game against the Kansas City Chiefs will have the highest average sold ticket price at $489 on the secondary market this week. This shows strong demand for Bills’ tickets as fans get ready for the game on Sunday.  The Buffalo News
