COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Lea Sobieraski, a liver transplant survivor, has become a community leader at the Kenan Center in Lockport by expanding youth sports and cultural programs that build confidence and teamwork. She now uses her experience to encourage organ donation and to offer children a welcoming space to learn life skills (a tribute to her second chance).  WGRZ
  • The 130th YMCA Turkey Trot takes place today at 9:00 a.m. from Delaware and Tacoma Avenues as runners face light snow and strong wind along a route that goes through Niagara Square and Church Street—organizers say no delays are expected.  WBEN
  • The NFTA and FeedMore WNY are hosting a holiday food drive to collect food donations for local families in need—organizers say it will support community members during the busy season.  WGRZ

CULTURE NEWS

  • The Greater Lancaster Museum of Firefighting will host the 18th Annual Christmasville Fire Truck Parade on November 29 in Lancaster. Nearly 200 decorated emergency vehicles will parade along a route that begins at Lancaster High School and ends at the traffic circle near the water tower — the event promises a festive display for local residents.  ABC 7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Trocaire will launch its entry-level program, ChatGPT 101 Professional Certification in Generative AI Foundations, this December as it welcomes its first cohort—highlighting the growing need for basic AI skills in emerging technologies. The program aims to equip students with essential knowledge as artificial intelligence becomes a key driver in society.  The Buffalo News
  • Buffalo State University seniors in the Television and Film Arts program created a pilot called Spares that will be screened free to the public at 7:00 p.m. on Saturday, December 6 at the Warren Enters Theatre—this half-hour show is a y2k coming-of-age story about a teen who finds love and sisterhood in an underground all-girls bowling team in a conservative town.  Buffalo State University

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Cold air is sweeping across the Great Lakes and triggering lake-effect snow in western New York—Buffalo is expected to receive 1 to 18 inches as variable snow bands develop. Meteorologists note the system started in Michigan and will continue bringing heavy snowfall into the weekend.  WBEN

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • On Wednesday, the Buffalo Common Council approved a Homestead Plan that will let residents, nonprofits, and developers buy vacant city lots for as little as $1,000 so they can build homes, gardens, or community spaces. City leaders hope the plan will reduce dumping and boost home values by turning 6,000 empty lots—mostly on the East side—into useful assets.  WGRZ
  • Erie County officials outlined plans with their snow fighting equipment — emphasizing safety measures as winter storms approach during today's Thanksgiving holiday.  WGRZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Buffalo Bills fans helped maintain local blood supplies by donating during a ConnectLife blood drive held yesterday at Highmark Stadium—donors received Bills-branded gloves and the chance to win prizes as hospitals prepared for a winter storm and a busy holiday weekend.  WGRZ
  • D’Youville was awarded $100,000 to support the Refresh Community Mental Health Project— a two-year initiative that will serve 300 young people from communities affected by past drug policies. The project will provide mental health services for youth.  The Buffalo News
  • The UB Veggie Van (a mobile farmers market) found that 50% to 60% of UB students reported food insecurity in a 2023 survey and provided fresh produce on Mondays and Wednesdays at designated campus halls. The program will expand soon to include six markets across the campuses to improve access to nutritious food.  The Spectrum
