COMMUNITY NEWS

  • United Way + Assemblymember Jon Rivera have expanded the Dolly Parton Imagination Library to include all of Erie County, providing a free book each month to children until age 5. The effort builds on the pilot program that delivered 20,000 books in its first year.  WBFO
  • Delaware North’s Adopt-A-Family initiative spread holiday cheer to six families today — volunteers backed up the toy donations to ensure extra support for the holiday season.  WGRZ
  • Neighbors will gather on Jan. 19 at Bethel AME Church on Michigan Avenue for the 6th annual MLK Day of Service as part of the National Day of Service. About 300 volunteers will work on 22 projects on the East Side to honor Dr. King's legacy.  ABC 7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Canisius University will expand its Western New York Prosperity Fellowship Program thanks to a $400K grant from the Bryant Foundation & Prentice Family Foundation. The new program will support entrepreneurial students and boost regional economic growth.  The Buffalo News

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Baird Foundation allocated $100,000 to the East Side Parkways Coalition to support efforts to restore Olmsted's original parkway design along the Kensington Expressway in Buffalo. DOT listening sessions are ongoing as the coalition uses the funds for outreach and litigation against a tunnel proposal.  WBEN
  • State officials announced that 35 East Side projects (commercial and mixed-use) will split $10 million from the new East Side Building Fund, with funding aimed at supporting local redevelopment.  The Buffalo News
  • The New York State Community Commission on Reparations Remedies is collecting local input to shape policy recommendations addressing historical discrimination. It held public hearings in Buffalo (focusing on topics like climate justice and housing segregation) and plans to submit its report in December 2026.  WGRZ
  • Buffalo Mayor Chris Scanlon filed abandonment proceedings in state Supreme Court last week against Canadian developer Harry Stinson for the long-vacant Buffalo Grand Hotel, citing over $350,000 in unpaid taxes and code violations.
