COMMUNITY NEWS

  • Buffalo Zoo welcomed Tupi (a giant male anteater) who is now on display for visitors today during regular zoo hours.  WGRZ
  • Buffalo Harbor State Park’s $47.5M redevelopment will be completed before Memorial Day and brings a new splash pad, improved playground, permanent buildings for offices, restrooms, community space, and a retail shop with grab-and-go food options (expecting higher visitor turnout). Interior work like plumbing and painting will finish this winter.  WGRZ
  • Longtime Buffalo Place director Mike Schmand is retiring on Dec. 31 after 28 years of service; his final board meeting on Dec. 17 honored his downtown work with standing ovations (a tribute to his lasting impact on city growth).  WBEN

BUSINESS NEWS

  • AMC will close its Market Arcade 8 theatre on Main Street at the end of December—set to cease operations on Dec. 31, with lease termination and fixture removal arranged for January. The location, which opened in 2018, marks another change in Buffalo’s evolving theatre district.  ABC 7

CRIME NEWS

  • Mark Talley's gray Kia Sorrento (license plate LPN-8024) carrying $3,000 in donated gifts was stolen outside Tops on Elmwood Ave on Friday, impacting his holiday drive to drop off the gifts and prompting him to ask neighbors to report any sightings.  ABC 7

EDUCATION NEWS

  • Students at Bennett High School recently received copies of a book they helped create as part of a Holocaust education program that teaches lessons on empathy and tolerance (core skills for a kinder community). The project invites them to reflect on history and shape a future with less hate.  WGRZ

ENVIRONMENT NEWS

  • Buffalo Zoo welcomed Tupi, a seven-year-old giant anteater, on Oct. 28 as part of a Species Survival Plan to conserve his species by pairing him with resident Maria at the Rainforest Falls exhibit. He was born on July 30 at Connecticut's Beardsley Zoo and later lived at the Nashville Zoo.  WGRZ

GOVERNMENT NEWS

  • The Common Council approved a $3M settlement on Wednesday for the family of William Sager Jr., who died in a 2014 Molly’s Pub incident — Donald Hall, who was handcuffed while helping, will receive $290K.  WGRZ

SPORTS NEWS

  • Buffalo Bills have a three-game win streak and are headed to Cleveland this weekend with a chance to clinch a playoff spot if (Indianapolis or Houston) lose their games; quarterback Josh Allen says the team is close to peaking but still needs quicker starts.  WGRZ
  • Buffalo Bills signed kicker Michael Badgley to their practice squad Tuesday to fill in for injured Matt Prater. The team will play Cleveland Sunday while Badgley (with 7 NFL seasons) prepares to take on the interim role.  WGRZ
