COMMUNITY NEWS

  • On Saturday, the Buffalo Fire Department held a memorial at North Division Street to honor five firefighters and two civilians killed in a propane explosion 42 years ago. The gathering reinforced safety changes that continue to protect the community.  WGRZ

HEALTH NEWS

  • Tom Golisano's $50 million gift will fund a new pediatric outpatient mental health center at the soon-to-be renamed Golisano Children's Hospital, adding partial hospitalization services for local youth. The project will expand mental health care across Buffalo.  The Buffalo News
  • Flu season began early in Western New York as one doctor reported a high increase in cases and a new H3N2 variant that lowers natural immunity, making getting the flu shot critical.  WBEN

SPORTS NEWS

  • The Sabres extended their winning streak to eight games after beating the Bruins 4-1 at Keybank Center Sunday night.  WGRZ
  • Bills quarterback Josh Allen and coach Sean McDermott spoke after the team lost to the Eagles in Week 17 on Dec. 28. They offered insight into team challenges and adjustments during the postgame news conference.  WGRZ
  • Bills coach Sean McDermott held a news conference on Dec. 28 after his team lost at home to the Philadelphia Eagles in Week 17.  WGRZ
  • Both Canisius and Niagara hockey teams have dropped to mid-conference records (fifth and ninth in the standings) by winter break. Niagara will host an exhibition on New Year's Eve at 2 p.m. while Canisius travels to St. Charles for a series starting January 2.  WGRZ
  • The Bills sold all 54,628 personal seat licenses before Christmas, generating over $260 million to help pay for the $2.2 billion Highmark Stadium in Orchard Park. Erie County Executive Mark Poloncarz said the sales exceeded expectations and show strong community support as the venue will open this summer.  WBEN
